The University of Notre Dame women’s track and field team opened the 2001 indoor track season with tri-meet victory over Western Michigan and Ball State, Friday night at the Loftus Sports Center. The team edged Ball State 125-121, with Western Michigan placing third (63 points).
Leading the women to victory, All-American long jump specialist and sophomore Tameisha King (Mableton, Ga.) won three individual events on the night. King dashed to first in the 60-meter high hurdles in 8.63, then captured first in the 60 meters (7.70) and finished the night with victory in the long jump (19-4 1/4).
Junior Liz Grow (New Braunfels, Texas) won two events in the meet, capturing first in the 200 meters (24.49) and running an NCAA qualifying time of 54.61 in the 400 meters.
Other event winners for the Irish women were three freshmen. Megan Johnson (Seattle, Wa.) won the 800 meters (2:16.73), Jill VanWeelden (Scottsdale, Ariz.) took first place in the pole vault with a new school record clearance (11-4) and Jennifer Kearney (Dallas, Texas) took first in the high jump (5-3 3/4).
Next up for the Irish is another home meet with Michigan State on Friday, Jan. 26. Competition starts at 6 p.m.
