Irish To Play For ACC Title At Virginia On Sunday

Notre Dame Game NotesNOTRE DAME, Ind. — No. 16 Notre Dame will play for the ACC Championship title for the second straight season, facing No. 11 Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, at Klöckner Stadium on Sunday, April 29 at noon ET.

The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU with Anish Shroff (playby-play), Quint Kessenich (analyst) and Paul Carcaterra (analyst) on the call.

Irish At The ACC Championship

• Notre Dame is playing in its fifth ACC Championship. The Irish have an all-time record of 4-3 at the ACC Championships.

• The Irish claimed an ACC Championship title in the team’s first season in the league in 2014. Notre Dame won a pair of one goal games over Maryland (6-5) in the semifinal and Syracuse (15-14) in the final.

• Notre Dame defeated Duke on Friday evening to punch its ticket to its second straight ACC title game..

• The Irish have faced the Blue Devils in the semifinals of each of the last three ACC Championships, going 2-1 in those matchups.

The Virginia Series

• Sunday will be the 13th meeting all-time between Notre Dame and Virginia. The Irish lead the series 7-5.

• The two teams met earlier this season in Arlotta Stadium with the Irish winning the contest 9-7. Mikey Wynne led the Irish with four goals while Bryan Costabile and Brendan Gleason each added two. John Sexton had one of his best games in his career with five caused turnovers and eight ground balls.

• Notre Dame has won each of the last six meetings against the Cavaliers, including all five matchups in conference play.

• Five of the last six meetings have been decided by two goals or less.

Best Attacking Display Of The Season

• Notre Dame scored a season-high 14 goals en route to a 14-11 win over No. 1 Duke in the ACC Championship semifinals.

• Junior Ryder Garnsey led the way for the Irish with six points on a game-high five goals and one assist.

• Junior Brendan Gleason also impressed, tallying six points off three goals and three assists.

• Sophomore Bryan Costabile also turned in a hat trick with three goals and one assist.

Beating The Best

• With the 14-11 win over No. Duke on Friday evening, the Irish have now won three straight matchups against teams ranked No. 1 in the country.

• The Irish defeated then-No. 1 Maryland by a score of 5-4 at Arlotta Stadium in 2017.

• Notre Dame also downed No. 1 Syracuse at Arlotta Stadium by a final of 13-12 in two overtimes in 2015.

Stifling Defense

• The Irish have allowed an average of 9.17 goals per game to rank 15th in the country, despite facing some of the most potent attacks at the DI level.

• Notre Dame has held seven of its 12 opponents to fewer than 10 goals.

• The Irish defense held both then-No. 7 Virginia and then-No. 5 Duke to their season lows for goals scored in a game.

• Duke (No. 3), Virginia (No. 7) and Denver (No. 11) all rank in the top 20 in goals scored per game this season and the Irish held each to under 10 goals.

Moving Up In The Ranks

• Senior attackman Mikey Wynne ranks tied for third in program history in career goals with 122.

• Wynne moved into a tied for third with Notre Dame legend Matt Kavanagh with two goals against Duke (4/27).

• Wynne is just the eighth player in program history to surpass the 100-goal mark, as he scored three times against Army in the final regular-season game of the 2017 season on May 6 to reach the milestone.

The 300 Club

• Baumer Family Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach Kevin Corrigan is one of just four active Division I coaches to reach the 300-win mark.

• Corrigan has an overall record of 302-153 in his 32 seasons of coaching.

• The head coach is 292-138 in his 30 seasons at Notre Dame.

• Corrigan is the longest tenured men’s lacrosse coach at the DI level.
